3.0 star ratingFood was excellent, the room was well appointed. We enjoyed the Spa and the treatments. In the main the staff were very attentive, but some small things let them down for a 5 star hotelOn arrival at 10am the check-in experience was very good and we were advised our room would be guaranteed available at 2pm. When 2 o'clock arrived our room wasn't ready and even at 3pm when they let us into the room it was still being cleaned. On day 2 when we got back to our room at 2.30pm it still hadn't been cleaned. Other minor issues left us feeling a little disapponted for a couple that don't complain and are very amenable and understanding when things don't run as smoothly as you'd like.10 September 2008

5.0 star ratingAbsolutely fantastic 5* hotel as central as you can get in Edinburgh - staff are all excellent.NoneIrishKaz27 August 2010
5.0 star ratingNice hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Good pool and gym, some nice public areas i.e. lounge on level 3 and the main dining area. Food was very good both breakfast and dinner (but no Orange juice included with Full Scottish breakfast unless you had continental). Not impressed with additional charges for WiFi, toilet was a bit lose in my bathroom (but it was reported to maintenance to be fixed whilst I was still checking out). Flat screen TV very small. Bed was not as comfortable as I would expect from this class of hotel (Tigerlilly on George street beats the Scotsman for bed, bathroom, free wifi and free fruit in room). 14 August 2011

2.0 star ratingThe hotel has been designed around what was the Scotsman newspaper offices, and is a listed building. The first thoughts I had when entering the hotel was "they must be renovating the reception area" as it was so small, and temporary looking. Unfortunately, this was the reception area, a cramped place with two office desks at one end and two receptionists. The standard (study) room provided was small with 3 star decor, very warm, and stuffy, and because the hotel has no air-con had an electric fan to cope. The fan was on all night, and didn't cope! we had dinner on the first evening, and dined out after that. The menu had a limited choice (you can see the menu on the Scotsman website), and the qualiy was from a chef who obviously thinks he is delivering smart cuisine, but fails completely. The staff in reception are friendly, professional, and very helpful. The staff in the restaurant went through the motions (not once were we asked if everything was OK), served the food, and were a bit disorganised - especially at breakfast. By contrast we had dinner at the Balmoral Hadrian's Brasserie where the staff were very attentive, very friendly, and the food was excellent. The residents lounge is one floor down from reception - a cold place which looks like a furniture storeroom with a mishmash of sofas, and chairs. Cold and uninviting. No-one was there. The hotel may be an AA 5 star based on the facilities provided, but is a 5 star failure achieving none of the 5 star wow-factor qualities. The rooms are very ordinary, with no comfortable public areas.rannoch19 October 2012

1.0 star ratingWe were pleased with the hotel in every . The position was extremely convenient and inspite of being on a busy road we heard no noise at all thanks to the double glazing . We simply crossed the road from the station to reach the hotel and were within 10 minutes walk of the art gallery and museum . All fitments in our room were of the highest quality . I particularly appreciated the fine linen . Food was excellent and service polite and helpful . The kind head porter even put us on the train home . I would give the Scotsman 5 stars unhestitingly .Elisabeth davies .01 November 2012

5.0 star ratingWonderful staff, lovely hotel, fabulous afternoon tea and breakfast! Would highly recommend! Thank you The Scotsman! 19 December 2012
3.0 star ratingReception and concierge staff were friendly and helpful Brasserie staff were conspicuous by their absence. Very poor service and surly attitude by many. Perhaps too much celebrating the night before? Dinner reservations had been 'lost' and the bar closed mid afternoon on new years eve with no where else available to get a drink!!! 04 January 2013
4.5 star ratingFrom the moment we arrived the staff at The Scotsman Hotel were extremely courteous and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The standard of breakfast was excellent. We were kindly offered an upgrade to the Editors suite as the staff were aware it was our wedding anniversary. The price we payed with Hotelopia was outstanding in comparison to the sites we'd trawled through and included breakfast. The location could not have been better, situated on the North Bridge and central for Princes Street, The Royal Mile and Waverly Station. Once again I cannot stress enough the professionalism of the service we received from the genuinely pleasant staff who went out of their to ensure that our stay was memorable. We will definitely be returning.MRSWHEELIE18 December 2012

5.0 star ratingThe Scotsman is a beautiful hotel, right in the centre of Edinburgh. We booked our stay to celebrate a 50th birthday and from the moment we arrived, the staff made our stay perfect. Our room was large with fantastic views over the city and the amenities were superb. The staff couldn't do enough to help and with an incredible willingness to make our stay as wonderful as possible. Their professionalism couldn't be faltered. The restaurant and standard of food was excellent. I would highly recommend the Scotsman as the prefect retreat in Edingburgh. Thank you!Cressida 05 February 2013
5.0 star ratingFantastic hotel in great location with the friendliest, most helpful staff imaginable. Bearing in mind we stayed during a busy 6 nations weekend- nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely be back to enjoy another amazing stay in a wonderful room and make the most of the amazing breakfast! No negatives12 March 2013

4.0 star ratingThis 2 night break was our honeymoon. The reception staff very kindly arranged an upgraded room, and wine and chocolates in our room. It was a lovely touch!!Pool area and water a little too cold and lighting too dim for my liking. Evening menu didn't really entice us.27 March 2013
4.5 star ratingLovely room. Great views. Delicious haggis and poached eggs for breakfast. Very helpful staff.Could not access video channel and when I checked with receptionist she had very limited DVD's for me to borrow. Because I had checked the inhouse movie guide and found a film I particularly wanted to see, I decided to stay in and relax after my tiring journey from Australia - if I had known the service was out of order I could have made other plans. Felt this was a little unprofessional considering the rating on The Scotsman but you do have a lovely little hotel in a great location.30 May 2013

3.5 star ratingGood location. Printed out my boarding pass for me. Reception staff mostly very nice.Very noisy at night. Drunk people outside until 4am.So loud it was as if windows were open and I was on 8th floor. No air con. Bad pillows. Scruffy bath robes. No sense of being 5 star. Glad I found good deal with Hotelopia and didn't pay full price.Anonymous 08 July 2014
