1.5 star ratingIt was in Durham and it was the only hotel we could get last minute. Also free parking.Major investment needed in the fabric of the building and in staff training. The following is a true statement of our experience at this "Hotel". Upon arrival, one single guest was being checked in, with another couple waiting in front us. One staff members duty was clearly to check guests in, however the other was just standing around looking disinterested in the queue of CUSTOMERS and only moved when someone pushed ahead of the queue asking for their key. It was at this moment when he "sprung" into action to get the key. Following that moment of action, he went back behind the desk, while we and the other couple continued to wait to be checked in. When we eventually got checked in, no apology was given for our wait. When we got to our room it was clearly in need of some maintenance. We found the following: water damage to ceiling around electric light fittings, paper coming off ceiling, obvious signs of damp on walls, the grouting ion the bathroom was heavily stained, mould growth on silicone around the bath and bottom of shower curtain, the bathroom smelt unclean (faint aroma of urine), no complimentary soap or shampoo (when asked for at reception, we were begrudgingly given some, with no apology and the non-slip bath mat was a relic of the 1980s. When we went to bed it was very warm and there was a lot of noise from the road (cars and students), so we decided to use the large electric fan found in the wardrobe. Shortly after turning it on, the fan head snapped off the body, with the cage flying off and the blades still spinning until it fell on the floor. The next day when we took it to reception and explained what had happened to the fan, the lady at reception just laughed nervously and promised to get us another one (which they did!!!). Regarding the breakfast, this was very limited in size and quality....one rasher of thin poor quality bacon (you get better at a supermarket), one small (3 inch) sausage, one egg, 6 - 7 small button mushrooms, one tomato and NO beans or hash brown/potato. Apart from a "full" English breakfast, the only other "choice" was cereal. For the price we paid and our experience, we would never use or recommend this hotel again.Hillside05 July 2011
2.5 star ratingThey coped well for having no information of the booking.I did not get the booking price because they had no record of it.30 June 2011
3.5 star ratingExcellent value for money, perfect city centre location, big spacious room (although a little dated), good breakfast. Very happy for the price I paid.I've never met a more hotel receptionist in my life!! I guess the rooms need a bit of an upgrade as the furniture and carpets are a little dated but I'd certainly go back.MikeyB02 August 2011
3.0 star ratingVery convenient for the centre of Durham City with free car parking. Rooms adequate for a short stay. Breakfast good. Not very friendly or helpful reception staff. Our 3rd visit( we go back because of convenience and value) and every time the TV hasnt worked properly. Rooms comfortable and clean but quite dingy. Very convenient for overnight stay but woulnt want to stay longer. Can be a bit noisy- our most recent room overlooked the car park and service access area which was very noisy at 6am( sounded like beer barrels being delivered)Eccles29 September 2011
2.5 star ratingThe breakfast was ok The hotel is very dated and in desperate need of refurbishment. Our room was freezing cold and I had to ask for a heater to try and warm it up. I did ask to change my room initially but the alternative was just as cold. Even the dining room had plug in heaters all over the place to keep it warm. The Princess20 December 2011
3.5 star ratingtrouble free visit, everything you would expect of a 3 star hotelBreakfast a little meager, 1 sausage 1 rasher of bacon, plus the usual. Noisey fan in bathroom Hotel could be said to be "shabby chic" Bemax12 December 2011
