2.0 star ratingLocation. History.Shabby room with furniture past its best. No children's licence in the bar (nor were we informed about this on check in, despite having a family room!). Awful breakfast buffet with filthy serving dishes - suspect hygene training of foreign staff to be woefully lacking. Food poorly cooked and even worse in presentation. We noticed the porridge heater being turned on at half past eight one morning - did it have fresh contents or was it from the previous day? Room had back view with a window panel covered with wood - temporary repair which seemed to have become permanent. Firedoor was propped open all day, despite displaying a sign saying it was to remain closed. Staff were unfriendly (even the local ones) and unprofessional - customers seen as an inconvenience and interuption. Overall very unsatisfactory on a lot of fronts with no evidence of any pride in the establishment. Too many foreign staff who obviously didn't care.28 August 2008
4.0 star ratingGood location, friendly staff. Was very clean if needing a little updating here and there. The hotel was a little outdated but at the same time it had character and charm, and was clean. Still, we felt welcome and enjoyed our stay - also the price was reasonable for what we got. Public space in the hotel is large, and the modern bar good. Couldn't help feeling that they were a little under-staffed - but staff were very pleasant. On the night of arrival they were also dealing with a large coach party so they had their hands full. A little maintenance would go a long . The hotel was pleasant but small changes would make a difference - for example, cleaning the weeds out the gutter, and having the 2009 programme (not 2008!) on the notice board at the front of the hotel. In the bedroom some of the chairs were worn and it would have been better without them, or to have some basic new furniture in it. Don't want to complain though as very much enjoyed the stay. Would prefer to see a breakfast with less wastage - perhaps better to take individual orders as, towards the end of the buffet, there was still a lot of food left which must go to waste. 4.0 star ratingGood helpful staff. Many bedroom doors could do with a lick of paint. If, as I did, you come down to breakfast at the same time as a coach party, that can be a pain.29 May 2012
3.5 star ratingGreat food, staff friendlyWine list seems to be non exsistent - asked for a glass of something specific ''we dont have that just the miniature bottles''. I thought he meant that brand was only available in mini bottles so asked for a glass of something else, and the waiter in his best deadpan stated they only had miniature bottles of one brand of white wine and nothing else (so why on earth have a wine list??) Then I looked at the bar pumps..''pint of Stella please''..waiters deadpan response ''we don't have Stella, just Tennants and Guinness'' (I was being spoken to as if I should have known these things that were either advertised or on display weren't available). An apology or explaination would have been nice!!16 April 2013
