1.5 star ratingProximity to harbour for trips to Mull, Iona, Staffa etc., the fresh fish If ever there was a place in need a visit from Alex Polizzi, then here it is. Having visited Oban many times, I was really looking forward to our stay in the Caledonian Hotel. Sadly, it was very disappointing. Where do I start? Perhaps the biggest inconvenience for guests, (many of whom are over 60), was that the lift still not working after over 3 months out of order - we had to climb six flights of stairs to our room (and we're relatively young and fit). On entering our attic room, after our energetic climb, the heat hit you like a blast-furnace: the central heating was on full, and despite the room information stating that guests have control over it, it was uncontrollable - even when switched off. Looking then to relax, we then discovered that the archaic TV in room was of poor quality - and could not hear anything over the loud buzzing sound, despite being up full volume. To no avail, this was swapped for another, crumbling wreck by the helpful receptionist. And don't look for a lie in either. The noisy central heating system or water tank will have you awake, promptly at 7am as it gushes and grumbles through the adjacent wall. Whilst on the topic of water, the hot water in bathroom had three options: very hot, scalding and third degree burns. Certainly not somewhere to bathe younger children or babies. To add insult to injury, the bar, whilst very tolerant of children, was manned by one person over the busy Easter period, so service was slow to non-existent - and, to our alarm, the shutters were down by 10.30pm on a Friday night with at least 20 customers sitting relaxing (after their weary climbs to their rooms I expect) and drinking! On going down for breakfast, there was no one to greet you and show you to your table (as stated on the notice on entering dining room) as it's the same, worn out, bar staff from night before - not to mention the unidentifiable objects floating in milk. Again, service was slow to non-existent. On a more positive note, the cooked breakfast was fine. I take my hat off to long-suffering staff who have to make excuses for this poor attempt at hospitality in one of Scotland's most popular tourist destinations. Altogether, this was not good value for money and I would definitely NOT recommend. Karen196924 April 2013
