3.5 star ratingThe breakfast in this hotel has to be about the best I have had in the UK - Fantastic presentation, quality, quantity and waiting staff. The entrance is a lovely as one would expect and the grounds perfect for sitting to read the paper in the morning sunshine. Apart from one incident, the hotel staff were 5 star in appearance and standard of service. The air-con worked well, the bed was ok, and the large flat screen TV worked well. When I called for ice from room service - a very large bucket of ice arrived at the door 5 minutes later - great service. The spa / pool staff were lovely and I liked the code locks on the changing room storage doors.Bit of an interesting start to the booking-in when the receptionist kept looking at my partner with a strange look until my partner was asked to stand away from the desk so that the receptionist could have privacy with me to take my details. A bit rude I thought - my partner is the same sex as me - not the same colour and I think the receptionist was calling on some very old stereotyping.. For this I have had to mark the staff down to fair - but the rest were superb. I could not find a lift - that was a bit of a problem with a broken spine - but I made it up the stairs to the room which was a fair walk away. The house was beautiful, the room was rather Holiday-Inn in fashion and style, a bath and sink with bad grouting, and I think a little more effort could have gone in to the facilities to match the grand hotel features. There was no minibar fridge to cool my wine or leave some cold water in. In was like staying in a plain hotel next to a beautiful period house rather than the whole package. The pool was rather community swimming - there was so much that could have been done with a proper lighting design that would have made it far more special ( I am a lighting designer - so probably a view worth thinking about).Anonymous 16 August 2016
