Hicks Bay is a natural, spiritual environment populated by indigenous New Zealanders. Hicks Bay employs local people whose whanau have protected this environment for thousands of years. The coastal area is important to Maori culture, it is thought habitation in these parts began during the Toi period about 11th century, which pre-dates the great migration fleet by 200 years.
