4.5 star ratingThe plumbing needs up-grading in the cabins. There was sewer gas coming from the floor of the shower indicating that there may not be a U-trap in the drain below the floor. That allows methane gas into the room. I would hope that methane would be collected from the whole hotel system and used for heating water or for supplying kitchen stoves. 19 January 2013

3.5 star ratingThe restaurant seemed to be underprepared to tackle the claudy periods i.e. breakfast/dinner-times with large elderly groups, which somtimes complitellly blocked the access to the restaurant for hours... They should have offering periods/courses for large grups especially with half-board options (!), in order to protect the other individuals from the pushy folk-spirit and enable them to get their food and day started on time as well... To get some mango into the fruit basket has been an ethernal challenge almost always, while the fruit was dumping outside the streets of the region everywhere...13 May 2013
3.5 star ratingWe stayed here for 4 nights in May and found the the Costasur to be a good value, but not luxurious, all inclusive resort. They have absolutely made the most of the very pretty beach and lagoon in front of it. They have also made a very good effort with the beach front bungalows (an essential upgrade if you stay here) which are decorated to a much higher standard that the other hotel rooms (both the standard and the 'tropical'), which are extremely dated and rickety in comparison. As with all Cuban hotel buffets the food had high and low points, my particular highs were a beef and mushroom casserole and their ice cream. Two out of three of the reception staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly Caesar, as were a number of the bar staff. The entertainment staff were particularly enthusiastic and gave the impression that they really cared about what they did. All in all we had an enjoyable stay here and it was good to see the hotel and the beach being used by Cubans as well as foreign tourists. We had originally booked a 'tropical' room and started our stay there before we were offered an upgrade to a bungalow. Unfortunately these rooms were small and quite dingy, with dark claustraphobic bathrooms and wobbly fittings and are in need to significant updating. The pool area of the pool is also in need of expansion/improvment as the pool is quite small and the area a bit cramped, hence we spent all our time on the beach. Whilst most of the staff in other parts of the hotel were friendly a number of the catering staff were not, and some of the cooks in particular seemed plain sullen and refused to even speak to us even when we tried out our Spanish, were smiling and attempting eye contact, which was a shame. With a number of hot plates in the dining room it would also have been nice if items such as the french toast and pancakes had been made fresh, as in another hotel we stayed in during our trip, as what was mass produced at breakfast was almost inedible.JMD27 May 2014
