4.5 star ratingWe are a couple and chose to visit Monemvassia during Orthodox Easter 2013, which is a busy period. The Hotel is located at "Gefyra" village, opposite Monemvassia, about 800 metres from the bridge joining Monemvassia to the mainland. There is a shuttle service running all day from the bridge to the entrance of the castle and it is a nice walk from the Hotel to the bridge and castle. The lady running the hotel, Maria, did more than what was expected, was very kind and helpful and did her best in order to make our stay pleasant. We had a plate of welcome treat (individual chocolate, homemade biscuits and red Easter eggs) waiting in our room upon arrival. The room was of good size, with wifi, fridge inside the room, A/C, TV (few greek channels as there is a general issue with TV reception in Monemvvassia, but we did not care as we were out of the room practically all day long) and with a balcony looking towards the island/castle of Monemvasia. The hotel offers a quiet sleep which is important for us (this is not the case with some of the other hotels in Gefyra, that may be closer to the bridge and Monemvassia castle, but because they are built along the main road or the seaside road near the bridge, visitors staying there may experience significant noise from bars, motorbikes and cars) and the rooms and common places of Castro Hotel are spotless/very clean. Breakfast, served on a nice the balcony in front of the hotel was sufficiently varied and we were given an option of "fasting" breakfast or normal breakfast which was nice and considerate, since one of us was fasting for Orthodox Easter. We intentionally chose to stay at this hotel and were very happy we stayed here. Looking at some previous reviews on websites, yes, there are no scrambled eggs or sausages for breakfast and yes, there is no shower curtain in the bathroom, but we believe that reviews must take into account the service provided and the price paid and travellers must be reasonable as to what they should expect for the price they pay. We consider that at 38 Euros/night for a double room with breakfast during Orthodox Easter Holidays, this is great value for money and with excellent service. Stavros Dariya10 May 2013
