Hotel Information

Overlooking the shimmering waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the elegant Amara Wing Resort enjoys a wonderful location directly on a private stretch of pebble beach with sun loungers, parasols and a private jetty. The centre of Kemer with its numerous shopping opportunities, restaurants, bars and cafés as well as the marina and museums can be reached within a short stroll. The hotel's rooms are bright and modern, many of which enjoy splendid sea views. Surrounded by a lovely garden area, the hotel features various pools, including a main outdoor pool of more than 1,000 m2 as well as a small water park with three slides and a children's pool. Guests will appreciate a variety of sports facilities as well as a spa and wellness area with Turkish bath. Dining options include a main restaurant as well as several à la carte restaurants, and guests can have a drink in the cosy beer garden. A great choice for couples and families with children.

4.5 star ratingCertainly a cut above the average Turkish five-star hotel with a very generous all-inclusive package (international drinks, sparkling wine at breakfast and at reception, beer in the minibar, fruitbasket, slippers, bathrobe, tea and coffee making facilities and wi-fi internet all in the room and unlimited a la carte restaurant reservations), the beautiful staff uniforms, outdoor bar and BBQ restaurant open even in mid-January, outdoor and indoor heated (both to 30 degrees C) pools and overall excellent service in a high-class decor. The wine was highly drinkable (freshly-opened Dikmen, for those who know it) and the bar service and menu were excellent. The 24-hour Street Cafe bar and a la carte restaurant were much appreciated. The hotel also produced a daily pie-chart of the guest mix which was displayed by the lifts which made fascinating reading :-) There were 1% British in the hotel when we arrived but by the third day we had dropped off the chart altogether with only two of us and over 400 guests in the hotel. The mix as we left was approx 70% German, 15% Russian, 5% Belgian, 4% Turkish, then Ukranians and a few others. I understand that during the Summer, the Russians dominate. All the staff spoke good English (with the exception of the cleaners) and they warmed considerably to our attempts to speak Turkish. There was an exceptionally gifted accordionist, a small oldish man, who played and occasionally sang in a deep baritone while discreetly staring at the ceiling, in the French a la carte restaurant and in the lobby some nights. We enjoyed him immensely. The other live music was above average though we could have had a few old war songs for good measure. A very important aspect for us was that, unlike all other Turkish hotels, we were not pestered by the 'animation' team. We never felt excluded as the regular daily activities and the weekly programme were clearly displayed in several locations and these were going on around us especially while glugging wine at the beach bar, but no-one attempted to coerce us to take part or interrupted our eating, drinking or conversation as so frequently occurs in Turkish hotels. This discrete approach is to be highly commended. The at-table bar service was not the best but it was the second best I have experienced in Turkey, and should be considered excellent by all-inclusive standards. The a la carte restaurants (French and Italian by reservation, and the 24-hour Street Cafe) were all excellent in choice, quality, presentation and service. A single visit to any of these repays the nightly room rate. One caveat though, the American breakfast in the Street Cafe bore no resemblance to anything I have known with that description before. You will not find any pork products in this hotel, nor baked beans, and they must think everyone needs cucumber, olives and goats cheese at breakfast. Most negatives from our experiences were concentrated in the main restaurant (which was modern informal 'lido' style self-srvice). All 'pre-cooked' hot food was always cool to tepid, only the freshly cooked special was hot, there was no at-table tea/coffee service and the single coffee machine not once had milk in it - white coffee required a 300m circumnavigation of the restaurant, often there were vital items missing from where they should have been (bowls but no spoons, yogurt but no bowls, no hot plates etc.), the otherwise smart tables were spoilt by having a mix of two or three patterns of cutlery sometimes at the same place setting, and service that was totally inconsistent depending upon where one would (or could) sit. Also the piped music at breakfast was sometimes too loud, and other days almost inaudible. These are many minor issues which irritate and point to a lack of attention to detail. There was a distinct lack of drawer space in the rooms, with just the one under dressing table drawer. What appeared at first to be wall-mounted single bedside drawers were actually solid. I felt very short of storage space and I travelled hand-luggage only (on Thomas Cook airline - just 5Kg!) and had the twin room to myself. On colder days the main automatic doors to the pool, grounds and beach were switched off. A hard-to-read sign sellotaped to them directed us out down a corridor, through a restaurant and out through a single sliding door. The hotel should double up the main automatic doors, front and rear, so there are two sets to walk through and avoid this problem during the two extremes of temperature. The hotel is now non-smoking in all public areas (as required by Turksih law) but the one smoking area provided totally open to the rest of the hotel, being at the bottom of the full-height (6 floor) atrium, and smoke could usually be smelt in most of the public spaces. This is a crass oversight. There were other minor niggles, e.g. the placement of tables and chairs in the lobby misled many into squeezing through narrow spaces they shouldn't have knocking other people's tables or chairs or having duck under plants. None of these negatives would be difficult to correct and some or all of them may well have been corrected if you decide to visit.15 January 2009
